The term "swipe" in the Fashion Knitting/Crochet World is a common practice of using a photo that is circulating for reference in choosing a design that will be reworked in part (or whole) from the fashion photo. It is frequently used by Magazine Editors, Designers and Yarn Company Design Directors alike as a way to visualize what their next season's picks will be. It is also a way to understand what the finished piece will look like and secure the vision, in advance. As a designer for the HandKnitting Yarn industry, Mari Lynn is happy to reference Fashion to accompany her sketches, but she always tries to add some changes so as not to copy outright. For this class, we will be using a Fashion Swipe as an exercise so that you, the Knitter, can follow along in this process. In the first Class Segment you will: 1) See how a pattern piece schematic is drawn to reflect the measurements on (8 squares to the inch) graph paper of The Sample or Model size. The model size is the one worn in the photo. 2) After swatching the chosen yarn and determining the gauge, I will show how instructions for the model size are written from the schematic. In the Second Class Segment, I will guide you through: 1) How to add sizes to the sample size to fit several sizes. 2) How to draw a second schematic which is a check on the pattern numbers and also is a final schematic which is ready for print. Materials: one skein of Brown Sheep "Top of the Lamb" or other Aran weight yarn; US 9 knitting needle, scissors, paper and a pen.
